Naniette Coleman

Naniette's intellectual interests are in the areas of technology, risk, culture, organizations, and complexity. Her sociologically based research focuses on cybersecurity, surveillance, and privacy in the US context and incorporates computational social science. Specifically, Naniette examines how organizations respond to data breaches and in doing so assess risk, make decisions in environments of uncertainty, and comply with state, federal, and international privacy laws.

Naniette joins SFI in her PhD candidacy in the Sociology Department at the University of California Berkeley and following the completion of a multi-year, in-residence, UC-National Laboratory Graduate Fellowship at Los Alamos National Lab. Naniette remains the first and only social scientist selected for the latter University of California-wide distinction in the history of the program.  Naniette received her M.P.A. in Public Administration with a specialization in Democracy, Politics, and Institutions from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and her M.A. in Economics and B.A. in Communication from the University at Buffalo, SUNY. A non-traditional student, Naniette’s prior professional experience includes Government (local, state, and federal), as well as work for two international development organizations, and two universities.
