Anne Kandler

Senior Scientist, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology Department of Human Behavior, Ecology and Culture

Anne is a mathematician with broad interests in modeling and analyzing cultural shift processes. This includes understanding the role of demography, social transmission rules, social hierarchies or changes in the cultural environment on those processes but also exploring environmental or social factors that can initiate cultural shift. A special focus of her research is to pursue a modeling framework to study the dynamics of competition between, and associated evolution within, languages under various environmental and social circumstances. Anne obtained a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany) in 2006 and her Omidyar Fellowship at SFI followed a post-doctoral fellowship at University College London.
