Enrollment is now open for SFI’s flagship online course, Introduction to Complexity. The course will run from Oct. 1 through Dec. 16, 2019.

This free course is open to anyone and has no prerequisites. It is an accessible introduction to the field of complexity science, covering 10 major topics.

"You don't need a science or math background to take this introductory course," says SFI Science Board co-chair Melanie Mitchell, the course's creator and video instructor. "It simply requires an interest in the field and the willingness to participate in a hands-on approach to the subject.”

Instructor Santiago Guisasola (Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada) will guide students through the topic areas and is able to provide assistance in English and Portuguese.

Participants will learn about the tools used by complex systems scientists to understand, and sometimes to control, complex systems. Topics include dynamics, chaos, fractals, information theory, computation theory, evolution and adaptation, agent-based modeling, and networks.

Class Central, a site that collects information and reviews on thousands of online courses from around the world, ranked SFI’s “Introduction to Complexity” online course highest among 626 other online science courses in 2017.

Since it launched in 2013, the course been offered eight times and has welcomed more than 38,000 students from around the world.
