Music, as language, is a trait shared by all human societies. And the diversity of cultures and of the music that they engender may have evolved by evolutionary processes like the ones that gave rise to the diversity observed in living organisms. Since evolutionary processes do give rise to cultural diversity, we seek to uncover and describe these processes through data-based logical and mathematical analysis. The goal of this project is to establish the foundations to develop a quantitative, data-centered, and complexity-based framework for understanding Music as the computational, cognitive, cultural, and social agent that has shaped human societies for more than 40,000 years.
