We are exploring fundamental limits in nominally unrelated systems, ultimately to probe the limits of our current scientific theories.
What are the fundamental limits that underlie human endeavor—in learning and understanding, in performance, in prediction—and when might be bump up against those limits. SFI is partnering with companies and researchers to explore these questions.
In July 2016, we kicked off this initiative with the week-long Limits to Human Performance meeting in partnership with the Red Bull High Performance Group. Professional sports trainers, psychologists, neurologists, physiologists, and military special forces advisors discussed the extremes of human performance in both individual and team-based activities.
Two entangled meetings on the Limits of Prediction—one exploring the question from a the perspective of scientific theory, the other an Applied Complexity Network topical meeting exploring the question from the perspective of business and government—spanned prediction from mathematics and uncomputability to financial markets, technological innovation, and climate.
An annual conference on Limits will dive into a new topical areas, pushing against the boundaries of what we now believe is possible.
