SFI External Professors Alison Gopnik and Scott Page are among 120 new members of the National Academy of Sciences, announced this week. Election to NAS recognizes the members’ “distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.”

The National Academy of Sciences, established in 1863 under President Abraham Lincoln, helps recognize and amplify excellent research and oversees the National Research Council, which produces scientifically grounded advice to the government to benefit society. Membership in NAS is “considered one of the highest honors that a scientist can receive,” and is held by just 2,662 active members and 556 international members.

Gopnik, an SFI External Professor since 2022, is a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley.

Page, an SFI External Professor since 1999, has served on the SFI Science Board and is the John Seely Brown Distinguished University Professor of Complexity at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
