SFI External Professor Pablo Marquet visits Santa Fe.

External Professor Pablo Marquet has been named an international honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Science (AAA&S) for 2018, the Academy announced on April 18.

Marquet is one of 36 international honorary members from 20 countries. Based in Chile, Marquet's research focuses on macroecology and ecological complexity.

“Membership in the Academy is not only an honor, but also an opportunity and a responsibility,” said AAA&S president Jonathan Fanton in a press release. “Members can be inspired and engaged by connecting with one another and through Academy projects dedicated to the common good. The intellect, creativity, and commitment of the 2018 Class will enrich the work of the Academy and the world in which we live.” The 213 new members elected this year include author Ta-Nehisi Coates, actor Tom Hanks, 44th President of the United States Barack H. Obama, and Supreme Court Justice Sonia M. Sotomayor.  

Founded in 1780, AAA&S "convenes leaders from the academic, business, and government sectors to address critical challenges facing our global society." Past members include Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Maria Mitchell, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, Margaret Mead, Milton Friedman, and Martin Luther King, Jr.
