SFI Complexity Postdoctoral Fellow Anna Clemencia Guerrero has received a Whitman Center Fellowship from the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The fellowship, awarded to 24 researchers from around the world, brings exceptional scientists to MBL for up to 10 weeks of collaboration and access to specialized equipment to pursue projects in biology and ecology.

Guerrero studies how scientists design images to represent microscopic phenomena like cells and microbial aggregates, and how those images change what scientists think about the invisible physical world.

“My project is researching, designing, and installing a scientific and historical exhibit about the role of microscopy technology in the evolution of knowledge in cell biology,” says Guerrero. “This new exhibit will complement earlier exhibits I did at the MBL about the role of image data in cell biology.”

The MBL was founded in 1888 and brings biologists together to learn new techniques and conduct research. “During many points in its history, the MBL has been considered the center of American biology,” says Guerrero, noting that at least 30 Nobel laureates have spent time there. Today, the MBL still maintains its focus on basic biological sciences and developing new microscopy techniques.

Guerrero recently returned from an initial four weeks of preliminary research at MBL and plans to complete her project in the fall.
