Dehumanization is the attitude of conceiving of others as subhuman creatures. It has played a role in the worst atrocities that we Homo sapiens have perpetrated on one another, culminating in genocidal violence. But it is also a puzzling phenomenon—so puzzling that some deny its reality. In this presentation, philosopher David Livingstone Smith will discuss the results of his nearly twenty years of research into what dehumanization is, how it works, and what can be done about it.
