CANCELED - COVID19

Based on a close monitoring of the global situation and the research by our own affiliated faculty and others, the Santa Fe Institute has decided to suspend programming until at least mid-May, including our upcoming community lectures, in a decisive effort to #FlattenTheCurve.”

In 1943 Erwin Schrodinger famously delivered a set of lectures at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies aiming to tackle the question “What is Life?” from the first-principles approach of physics. Over 70 years later, we’ve still made little headway on answering this question. In this SFI Community Lecture, Sara Walker guides us through approaches aimed at developing a new theory for understanding life. Based on the idea that life is fundamentally about information and how it interacts with the physical world, this new theory could revolutionize our understanding both of the origin of life on Earth and how we should search for it on other worlds.

Sara Walker is an astrobiologist and theoretical physicist interested in the origin of life and how to find life on other worlds. At Arizona State University she is Deputy Director of the Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science, Associate Director of the ASU-Santa Fe Institute Center for Biosocial Complex Systems and Associate Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration.

Reserve your free tickets through the Lensic Online Box Office.

If you are unable to attend the lecture in person, you may stream the lecture live from our Youtube, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter pages.
