Meeting Summary: The JSMF – SFI Postdocs in Complexity Conference V will be held at the Santa Fe Institute on March 12th – 15th, 2019. It will bring together the new 2019 JSMF Fellows along with many of the same participants who have attended prior conferences — two sets of prestigious interdisciplinary researchers including 13 postdoctoral fellows based at SFI and 34 James S. McDonnell Foundation fellows who hail from academic institutions around the globe.  The bi-annual meeting provides networking opportunities for early career researchers working on complex systems science, as well as special sessions with speakers from the SFI faculty and other prominent speakers.

This four-day conference will build on the themes of the previous four Postdocs in Complexity meetings. On day one, invited speakers will give talks on a wide variety of topics from SFI’s postdoctoral leadership and career program; communication and public speaking skills with a focus on giving a ‘job talk’; proposal development and advice from JSMF and SFI postdoc alumni; to name a few. These talks will be optional for past participants who will have the opportunity to meet with collaborators on this day or join the conference on day two. On the remaining three days we will build on the success of prior conferences, combining postdoctoral fellow science talks, research jams and discussion sessions and a special session on ‘Presenting Data and Information’ with Edward Tufte, Professor Emeritus, Yale University.

The Postdocs in Complexity conferences are generously funded by the James S. McDonnell Foundation.
