InterPlanetary Film Scores: Art, Craft, Science? with Jeffrey Ernstoff

What goes into the making of a great sci-fi film score? What do the musical themes and sound effects from interplanetary/extraterrestrial films have in common?  What sets them apart?  How have technical innovations affected the process?  What are the tricks of the trade?  On the eve of the Santa Fe Institute's City-Wide Interplanetary Film Festival, join writer, multi-instrumentalist, and SFI arts consultant Jeffrey Ernstoff for a live performance with conceptual and technical insights into sci-fi-themed soundtracks that have left an indelible mark on the history of radio, television and motion pictures.  (Spoiler alert: You’ll never listen to these films the same way again.)

Jeffrey Ernstoff earned his Masters Degree in Arts Programming at Harvard University; a three time National Endowment for the Arts Fellow and former creative director for Radio City Music Hall, his scripts and music have been heard on CBS, NBC, ABC and at Boston’s Symphony Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center,  Mt. Rushmore, and The White House.

For this very special evening, Mr. Ernstoff’s program will also include a live demonstration/performance segment  by friend and Theremin Virtuoso, Rob Schwimmer (aka Carlos Antenna), who has played for Simon & Garfunkel, Bobby McFerrin, the Boston Pops and more.
