Abstract: In this fourth episode on balance, we will focus on the "slower-is-faster" effect, which can be seen as a shifting balance. Even when "make haste slowly" has been used as a motto since antiquity, these counterintuitive dynamics were first formalized only in 1999 while studying crowd dynamics. Still, they are applicable to a very broad range of phenomena. In fact, we will struggle to find a system without the slower-is-faster effect. If we want to reach balance, but this balance is shifting, how can we keep up with it?
