Abstract: I argue that increased competition benefits and entrenches dominants (rather than hurting them) under certain, increasingly common, conditions. Empirical investigations of various settings support this argument. For science: Analysis of citation patterns in the Web of Science suggests that scientific fields ossify--become trapped in existing canon--when the number of papers published each year grows too large.
