Abstract:  Humans and a few other species have evolved a level of sociality that exhibits a high degree of cooperation and collaboration. While cooperation in humans may be the default strategy, factors such as individual differences, social context and features of the task can modify behavior.  I will present results from recent experiments on how communication of expectations can increase cooperation in otherwise selfish individuals, as well as preliminary results from experiments on manipulating trust and how network structure affects collective problem solving. Finally, I will touch upon conflict in non-human animal groups and a planned experiment on conflict in humans.
